It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.
But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.
We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.
Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.
I am speechless. Right from the prologue, you are pulled into a story that stems from sadness and a vulnerable place.
“I forced my body to go numb, because if I wasn’t numb, I’d feel everything. If I felt everything, I’d fall apart, and I couldn’t fall apart.”
If you’ve read anything of Brittainy Cherry’s, then you know she has this writing style that flows beautifully through every emotion. She’ll break your heart before she starts piecing it back together. I read the last page and thought, I don’t know how I could ever write a review that would do this justice.
“If love was a moment, this would be where it existed.”
Tristan and Elizabeth have both suffered so much loss in their lives, but they each handle it completely different. Tristan shuts out the world as he barely goes through the motions of daily life. Elizabeth has no choice but to carry on, for her daughter. How do you give part of yourself to someone when you have nothing left to give? This is the story of second chances and mending broken hearts.
“You know that place in between nightmares and dreams? The place where tomorrows never come and yesterdays don’t hurt anymore? The place where your heart beats in sync with mine? The place where time doesn’t exist, and it’s easy to breathe?
I want to live there with you.”
I laughed, I cried, my soul felt empty right along with Tristan and Elizabeth. No matter how mean Tristan was, I still wanted to give him a hug. He wore his past like armor, keeping out all the good. I love that Elizabeth never gave up on him. Everyone is worthy of love. It’s at those times that you are the worst person to love, that you need it the most.
